A domain name registrar is an organization that allows individuals or organizations to register a domain name, which is then used to identify a website. A domain name registrar must be accredited by a generic top-level domain (gTLD) registry or a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) registry. The Registrar’s role is to maintain the database of names registered within the TLD; it manages and facilitates the resolution of disputes related to those names. A registrar typically provides Domain Name System (DNS) hosting services, email services, web hosting, and other associated services. Most domain name registrars are also Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Many domains are registered via a Registrar either directly or indirectly through an ISP. An ISP usually offers some combination of these services as part of its overall service offerings. Many ISPs resell what they purchase from a Registrar to offer these services to their customers.
