A GNU is a computer software typically released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). This license allows for the free distribution of the software and for modifications to be made to it. However, the GPL requires that any modifications made to the software must also be released under the same license. The term “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s Not Unix”. The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to create a free Unix-like operating system. Today, the project continues to develop a wide range of software, including the popular Linux operating system.
