FreeBSD is a free and open-source Unix-like operating system descended from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). It is based on U.C. Berkeley’s “4.4BSD-Lite” release, with some additional code from FreeBSD’s “Project Green”. While it shares many of the same characteristics as other BSD-derived systems, such as Linux, there are some significant differences. One of the most notable is that FreeBSD uses a different kernel than Linux. This gives FreeBSD several advantages, including better performance and increased stability. Additionally, the FreeBSD project is highly organized and well funded, which has resulted in a high-quality codebase. As a result, FreeBSD is widely used in computing, both for servers and desktop computers.
