DevOps

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and information-technology operations (Ops). It aims to shorten the systems development life cycle and provide continuous delivery with high software quality. DevOps is complementary to Agile software development; several DevOps aspects were developed initially to deal with the problems that Agile developers faced. The term “DevOps” is a portmanteau of “development” and “operations”. The term emerged in 2009 when it was coined by Brad Murphy and James Wickett while working on Project Montgolfier at CashNetUSA, an Enova International company. A survey found that 36 percent of respondents identified themselves as DevOps practitioners. In 2016, Gartner reported that 25 percent of surveyed organizations had advanced to DevOps practices at scale, with practical plans to continue adoption in the coming years. Because of the rapid pace of innovation in computing, DevOps has been necessary for some time; however, the term did not become widely used until recently.
